About The Poem

Remember heart is the temple of living God, so do not hurt anyone as therein is SHRINE of IDOL.

Take care and be empathetic to the needy and not sympathetic as it is more than going to the temple. This only is the great pilgrimage. This only is the pilgrim’s sacred duty.

MITIGATION OF THE SUFFERINGS AND MISERIES OF OTHERS IS MORE THAN GOING TO TEMPLE. LORD HIMSELF SAYS THAT SERVE MY CREATION AS THAT ONLY IS MY WORSHIP. LORD SAYS THAT YOU CAN MAKE MY DARSHAN IN SELFLESS SERVICE. HE SAYS I RESIDE MOST IN THE HEARTS OF THE DOWN-TRODDEN AND THE SLUM-DWELLERS, SO SERVE THEM. GOD IS NOT IN THE TEMPLE. THIS ALL IS SHOW BUSINESS. WE ARE SIMPLY DECEIVING AND CHEATING THE SELF.

Go Not to The Temple

by: Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore

Go not to the temple

To put flowers upon the feet of God

First fill your own house

With the fragrance of love and kindness

Go not to the temple

To light candles before the altar of God

First remove the darkness of sin,

Pride, and ego from your heart

Go not to the temple

To bow down your head in prayer

First learn to bow in humility

Before your fellowmen

And apologize to those you have wronged

Go not to the temple

To pray on bended knees

First bend down

To lift someone who is downtrodden

And strengthen the young ones

Not crush them

Go not to the temple

To ask for the forgiveness for your sins

First forgive from your heart

Those who have hurt you

Go not to the temple

To put flowers

Go not to the temple

To light candles

Go not to the temple

To bow down your head

Go not to the temple to pray

Go not to the temple

To ask for the forgiveness

First remove the darkness

Of sin, pride, and ego

First learn to bow in humility

First bend down to lift someone

First forgive from your heart
