About The Author

Rabindranath Tagore, born Robindronath Thakur, 7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941; sobriquet Gurudev, Kobiguru, Biswakobi was a Bengali poet, writer, composer, philosopher, social reformer and painter. He reshaped Bengali literature and music, as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Author of the "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse" of Gitanjali, he became in 1913 the first non-European as well as the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

About The Poem

‘Where the Mind is Without Fear’ was included in the volume called Naibedya. The poem is a prayer to God to protect the nation from evil effects. It is a pre-independent poem in which the poet sincerely urges to God to awake his fellow beings for the realization that the essential need to live in a free and united country. He wants his countrymen to awake and enjoy the life of full dignity and honour.

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action—
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

जहाँ झुका कोई भी सर न हो

 

जहाँ इल्म आज़ाद हो, ज़िंदा हो,

छोटी-छोटी दीवारों से, जहाँ

बँटा न हर बाशिंदा हो

 

जहाँ सच से सोच निकलती हो

लफ़्ज़ों में जान मचलती हो

 

जहाँ बाज़ुएँ कोशिश करने का

हर दिन कमाल दिखलाती हों

 

जहाँ अच्छी सोच की धाराएँ

सहरा में नहीं खो जाती हों

 

हो ज़हनो-दिल में सोच खुली

मुश्किल न कोई भी काम लगे

ऐसी आज़ाद-सी जन्नत में,

ए मेरे ख़ुदा! मेरा वतन जगे.
