Robert Lee Frost (March 26, 1874 – January 29, 1963) was an American poet. His work was initially published in England before it was published in the United States. Known for his realistic depictions of rural life and his command of American colloquial speech, Frost frequently wrote about settings from rural life in New England in the early 20th century, using them to examine complex social and philosophical themes.

About The Poem

"The Road Not Taken" is a narrative poem by Robert Frost, first published in the August 1915 issue of The Atlantic Monthly, and later published as the first poem in the collection Mountain Interval (1916). Its central theme is the divergence of paths, both literally and figuratively, although its interpretation is noted for being complex and potentially divergent.  It is a  poem that describes the dilemma of a person standing at a road with diversion. This diversion symbolizes real-life situations. Sometimes, in life too there come times when we have to take tough decisions. We could not decide what is right or wrong for us.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

 

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

 

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

 

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

 

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

जीवन के उस दोराहे पे

जहां राहें जुदा हुईं मेरी

किसी एक पे मैं जा सकता था

दोनों राहों पर ग़ौर किया

पर एक ही राह पे जाना था

किसी एक को ही पा सकता था

जहां राहें जुदा हुईं मेरी

किसी एक पे मैं जा सकता था

जिस राह को मैंने चुना था फिर

उस राह से थोड़ी अलग तो थी

जिस राह को मैंने छोड़ दिया

 

इस राह पे कम ही आते थे

कदमों के निशां से ज़ाहिर था

मैंने अपना रस्ता मोड़ दिया

उस राह से थोड़ी अलग तो थी

जिस राह को मैंने छोड़ दिया

 

जिस सुबह की बात बताता हूँ

मालूम था मुझको यूँ होगा

राहों से राहें जुड़ती हैं

 

इक बार चल पड़े राही फिर

वो लौट के कब आ पाता है

जिस राह को छोड़े जाते हैं,

उस राह पे क्या हो सकता था

ये समझ में किसको आता है ?

जब सालों में दोहराऊँगा

के जीवन के दोराहे पे

मुझे एक राह को चुनना था

 

दो राहों में से एक को चुन,

जो सीखा है, जो पाया है

जिस राह पे कम आते थे लोग,

हमने, उसको अपनाया है

 

और उसी वजह से आज का ये  

खुशनुमा-सा मंज़र पाया है
